The public housing at Addison/Halsted was another. It's for gays! Then it becomes not about that. Same with the Center on Halsted, which pre-dated the BYC moving but had the same phenomenon. Politicians, like today's Queer Activists, use gay rights as a shield for some really toxic behavior. Tunney folded like a chair and they moved in despite huge neighborhood opposition. HBHC had a letter leak saying any opposition was rooted in racism, xenophobia, homophobia (lol), and transphobia. I remember the SELVN (Southeast Lakeview Neighbors) being against the Broadway Youth Center ('youth' being as old as 24) moving into the church at Wellington/Broadway was a big to-do.
